MIG Welding Wire for Aluminium

Engweld stocks aluminium mig wire in different diameters and packaging sizes including plastic and metal baskets suitable for different welding applications.

Aluminium is lightweight and highly conductive metal which makes it easy to handle and transport and ideal for mig welding applications that require precise control of the weld bead. Aluminium is trickier to weld than steel, as it is very conductive and has a low melting point.

Aluminium MIG Wire - Excellent corrosion resistance & excellent flow characteristics.

Another advantage of using aluminium for aluminium mig welding is its excellent flow characteristics and excellent corrosion resistance which makes it suitable for welding structures that may be exposed to harsh weather conditions and other environmental factors.

It is important to note that when welding with aluminium mig wire you should use a low amperage setting and a high wire feed speed to prevent the aluminium wire from overheating and to create a strong and precise weld and to ensure you achieve maximum performance.

Which is the best shielding gas for MIG welding aluminium?

For MIG welding aluminium wire, the best choice from the Energas ARCAL™ range is ARCAL™ Prime.

While most ARCAL™ gases (like Speed or Force) are designed for steels and contain CO2, aluminium requires a completely inert environment to prevent oxidation and porosity.

Why ARCAL™ Prime is the correct choice:

  • Composition: It is 99.998% Pure Argon. Because it is inert, it will not react with the molten aluminium pool.

  • Performance: It provides high arc stability and a very clean weld surface with minimal spatter.

  • Versatility: It is the "universal" solution for non-ferrous metals. You can use the same bottle for both MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding of aluminium.

When to consider alternative shielding gases:

If you are working on very thick aluminium (typically over 10-12mm), you might find that pure Argon lacks the heat input needed for deep penetration. In these specialised cases, Energas offers "Technical" mixtures that include Helium:

Gas Solution Composition Best used for
ARCAL™ Prime 99.998% Argon Standard choice. All-purpose MIG/TIG aluminium welding.
Argon / Helium blend e.g., 70% Ar / 30% He Thick sections. Increased heat and deeper penetration.

Engweld also stocks Mild Steel MIG Wire, Stainless Steel MIG Wire, Bulk MIG Wires, Flux Cored Wires, Hardfacing & Specialist MIG Wires and Mini MIG Wire Reels
