Cut resistant gloves at Engweld

If you are working with sharp objects, particularly in wet and greasy environments where superior grip is necessary then Cut Resistant Gloves are a must have. Our range of cut proof gloves feature puncture resistance material to protect the wearer's hands from basically any sharp objects. Whether you are working in waste management, manufacturing, constructions and any applications with potential mechanical hazards, then cut resistant gloves are a necessity.

At Engweld we stock a wide range of cut resistant gloves engineered to meet strict UK and European safety standards (EN388:2016). Perfect for everything from glass handling to waste disposal, our range of cut resistant gloves offer superb grip and cut protection without sacrificing dexterity, durability and flexibility.

Your safety is paramount when choosing your next pair of anti-cut gloves, even more when you're working with sharp objects. This is why you need to match your protection with the risk assessment of the task. This will allow you to prevent injuries and make sure you’re in compliance with the safety regulations. The choice of your cut resistant gloves can also be a question of long-term cost-effectiveness.

Most often, cut resistant gloves are level 5 of Kevlar. These Kevlar gloves meet UK standards for safety gloves to ensure that all the workers, whether they are working in the industry or at home can be safe in their daily work.

If you are working in a specific environment, you might need other types of safety gloves. This is why, online and in all our UK stores, we also stock nitrile gloves and chemical resistant gloves in case you're working with hazardous substances. If you need strong protection against dangerous environments, we are stock rigger gloves, gripper gloves or impact resistant gloves. Thermal work gloves will protect you against high and low temperatures depending on your needs.

What are the standards for cut resistant gloves?

There are different standards when it comes to the level of cut protection. The two main ones will be the European Standard (EN 388) and the North American Standard (ANSI/ISEA 105).

For the EN-388 standards there are two cut resistant tests that are achieved, the Coup Test and the ISO 13997 test. The Coup Test measures the cut resistance by the number of circular blade rotations needed for cut-through. This results in a level 1 to 5 rating, but it's not suitable for highly cut-resistant materials.

This is why the ISO 13997 is used for the highly cut-resistant materials. It's a similar test to the ASTM F2992-15 and this test also uses the T-100 machine. During this test the force (in newton) required to cut-through with a straight blade the material is measured. This results in a Newton score and an A-F rating scale.

On the other hand, the ANSI/ISEA 105-2016 standard is using the ASTM F2992-15 test, also with the TDM-100 machine to determine the weight (in grams) needed for a straight blade to cut through a material in a 20mm length. With a scale from 200 to 6000 grams, a rating is attributed from A1 to A9.

While the EN-388 ranking is going from A to F, with F being the highest level with 3000 grams/30 Newtons, the ANSI/ISEA extend even more its test until 6000 grams/60 Newtons for its A9 standard with A1 being the equivalent to A standard for EN-388 and A6 being the equivalent to F EN-388 standard.

What is the highest level of cut resistant gloves?

The highest standard for cut resistant gloves are different depending on the standard and the test you are looking at:

  • The Coup Test for the EN-388 standard is going from a scale of 1 to 5, with the highest being the level 5 cut resistant gloves
  • The ISO 13997 for the EN-388 standard is going from A to F with F being the highest protection possible with a protection up to 3000 grams
  • The ANSI/ISEA 105-2016 standard is going from A1 to A9 from 200 to 6000 grams, the A6 being the same level of protection than the F level in the ISO 13997 test of the EN-388 standard.

What are cut resistant gloves used for?

Cut resistant gloves are used for different applications in different industries. In a common way, we can say that Cut Resistant gloves are used in any works that will need to handle sharp objects or tools. For instance, when working in the glass industry, you’ll handle glass sheets and fragments, in the metal working industry when handling sharp metal edges and swarf. These debris are also found in the construction or demolition industry.

But cut resistant gloves are also found in industries such as the food industry when handling knives and slicers or in the recycling and waste industry where sharp objects in waste are found while sorting the waste.

A last environment where you can find cut resistant gloves is for DIY works, these gloves will protect you against sharp tools or sharp objects you can handle, even more if you are working on a car project and handle sharp metal parts during assembly.
